Grammy 2023: Beyoncé's great night started, one award away from being the top winner in history

2023-02-06T02:19:23.335Z

The great singer was nominated in 9 categories and has already won three. Fito Páez had chances for best alternative/Latin rock album, and the surprise was the triumph of Argentine jazz player Leo Genovese.

The 65th edition of the

Grammy Awards

takes place this Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, in his third year at the helm of the award.

Also presenting awards were actress Viola Davis, and figures such as first lady Jill Biden, singer Cardi B, James Corden, actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and multiple Grammy winners Olivia Rodrigo and Shania Twain were expected.

Beyoncé

led the nominations with 9 chances, followed by Kendrick Lamar (8), Adele (7), Brandi Carlile (7), Mary J. Blige (6), DJ Khaled (6), Future (6), Terius “The Dream ” Gesteelde-Diamant (6), Randy Merrill (6) and Harry Styles (6).

By winning her first statuette in just half an hour of television, plus the two she won in the run-up, Beyoncé was already tying for the most-nominated artist in awards history.

With one more win, he could break the late British-Hungarian conductor Georg Solti's record for the most awards by winning four Golden Gramophones.

Solti, who has 31 Grammys, has held the record since 1997, and Beyoncé also already has 31.

The ceremony

Trevor Noah's introduction was made from the roof of the building opposite the stadium, and immediately gave rise to the first live number of the night:

Bad Bunny

, who entered the stage through the corridors singing

El apagón

, with his phrase “Everyone wants to be Latino”.

Then he did

After the Beach

and asked “I want to know if the Grammys are ready for the real party” and he followed all mambo, with the entire audience standing and dancing, including Taylor Swift.

She said goodbye exclaiming "Long live Latin music!".

Trevor Noah returned, announcing that he was going to be walking around the tables all night, “like a Chinese balloon”.

He greeted guests like Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Lizzo, LL Cool J, Adele and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

The next show was

Brandi Carlile

, hosted by his wife and two daughters.

She did

Broken Horses

, which had already won three Grammys off-television.

, and said doing it was the best experience of her life.

The premiere of 80 items not televised

Five hours before the big party at the Crypto Arena, the previous ceremony started, with

more than 80 items

that were delivered without live television, only on YouTube.

There was a lot of expectation for the result of the category where Fito Páez competed, best alternative/Latin rock album.

Hours later, the long-awaited moment arrived, and the great favorite, Rosalía, won for her successful album

De ella Motomami

.

This premiere took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and featured several conductors, such as comedian Randy Rainbow, actor Myles Frost, poet Amanda Gorman, producer Jimmy Jam, the legendary Judy Collins and Babyface, who first gave the directive to only go on stage if you are the winner, and that no person from your team go on your behalf.

Like the main event of the night, there was a

red carpet

and there was the arrival of Fito, very early.

There were also live shows, such as the jazz singer Samara Joy, Anoushka Shankar and the Colombian

Carlos Vives

, who made hits like

La gota fría

and

Pa' Mayte.

from his legendary album

Clásicos de la provincia

, from 1993. He went down in the audience and played a harmonica solo there.

The list of non-TV winners included several big names, such as the first Grammys of 2023 for multi-nominees

Beyoncé

and

Kendrick Lamar

(both winning two statuettes) as well as Ozzy Osbourne, Bonnie Raitt, albino Edgar Winter and Argentine Leo Genovese, for an album with the great Wayne Shorter.

As a fact of color, in the incidental music that followed the award that

Rubén Blades

won , sounded

No voy en tren

by Charly García.

Edgar Winter thanks his award for Best Contemporary Blues Album and jokes that it was for "diversity of skin".
