The Turkish Red Crescent invites people to donate blood after a strong earthquake

Kerem Kinik, president of the Turkish Red Crescent, said the organization is sending additional blood supplies to southern Turkey after a deadly earthquake struck early Monday.

"We are sending additional blood and blood products to the Deprem region. We have National Blood Reserves for first stage shipment in our Regional Blood Banks. However, we invite our citizens to donate blood throughout Turkey during the day for needs that may occur in the future," Kinik tweeted.

The Red Crescent is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent his "best wishes" to those affected by the earthquake.

At least 17 people were killed when the 7.8-magnitude quake struck southern Turkey in the early hours of Monday local time, toppling buildings and sending residents onto the streets as aftershocks were felt across the region.

Erdogan said the quake was felt in many parts of the country and Turkey's Emergency and Disaster Management Authority (AFAD) was on standby to help the victims.

“I convey my best wishes to all our citizens who were affected by the earthquake that occurred in Kahramanmaraş and was felt in many parts of our country.

All our relevant units are on alert under the coordination of AFAD,” Erdogan wrote on Twitter.

Journalist in Gaziantep tells CNN about strong aftershocks

Journalist Eyad Kourdi, who lives in the city of Gaziantep, told CNN there were up to eight "very strong" aftershocks in less than a minute after the magnitude 7.8 quake struck, causing belongings in his home to they fell to the ground.

Many of his neighbors had left their homes after the quake, he added.

Strong aftershocks are likely to continue in the hours and even days after an earthquake as strong as this one, according to CNN forecasters.

7.8 magnitude earthquake strikes southern Turkey

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern Turkey, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake occurred at 4:17 am local time.

It was also felt in Syria.

The depth of the quake was 24.1 kilometers and its epicenter was 23 kilometers east of Nurdagi, Gaziantep province.

Strong aftershocks reported: Another magnitude 6.7 quake struck 20 miles northwest of the epicenter about 11 minutes after the first quake, the USGS said.
