On February 6, the Canadian government issued an important announcement on the issue of continuing to support Hong Kong people in Canada, extending the "Lifeboat Program" for 2 years, and the deadline for applications has been extended to February 7, 2025.
Canada expanded the original program to include Hong Kongers who graduated within the past 10 years.
Canadian Immigration Minister Fraser (Sean Fraser) issued an announcement in the capital Ottawa.
He announced that Hong Kong people who have graduated from accredited educational institutions in Canada or overseas post-secondary education institutions within the past 10 years are also eligible to apply for open work visas.
Applicants can live in Canada with their spouse and children.
Canada has launched the "Lifeboat Plan" since 2021 to attract Hong Kong people to immigrate, including the establishment of a new work visa program for Hong Kong people, which is an open work visa (Open Work Permit). Hong Kong residents of overseas post-secondary education institutions apply to obtain work visas valid for up to 3 years. The original deadline for applications is February 7, 2023.
The Canadian side will also introduce two new pathways for Hong Kong people to guide permanent residence in 2021, one of which is for those who have more than one year of work experience in Canada and who have graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution or foreign equivalent institution within the past five years. Graduated Hong Kong residents apply, which means that Hong Kong people holding open work visas have a path to permanent residence.
