Initial reports received by the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums from some governorates indicated damage to some archaeological sites as a result of the earthquake this morning.

In Aleppo, the citadel suffered minor and moderate damages, including the fall of parts of the mill, cracks and the fall of parts of the northeastern defensive walls.

Also, large parts of the dome of the lighthouse of the Ayyubid mosque fell, and the entrances to the castle were damaged, and parts of the stones fell, including the entrance to the Mamluk defensive tower, and the facade of the Ottoman hospice was damaged.

Some museum artifacts were damaged inside the display storage, and cracks and cracks appeared on the facade of the National Museum in Aleppo.

The technicians in the Directorate of Antiquities of Aleppo are examining the old city, which was subjected to damages, collapses, and cracks in many private residential buildings, where the historic Aqaba neighborhood adjacent to the city’s western wall was damaged and collapsed, and it is not far from Antakya Gate. The same applies to the historical Al-Jalloum neighborhood. Structural damages occurred. Extensive, including the fall of dip ceilings, walls and parts of the facades.

Historical private houses in Al-Khandaq Avenue were also affected by moderate and minor damage, and information indicates that a number of minarets of historical mosques in Aleppo fell.

In Hama, historical buildings in the governorate were affected, which led to the fall of parts of some of the historical facades of these buildings, including the fall of 9 square meters of the facade of an archaeological historical property, at a height of two floors from the al-Jalaa segment, and the occurrence of cracks and cracks in the facades and walls of other historical buildings.

In the historical Al-Bashoura neighborhood, the façade of property 982 of the second real estate area was damaged by the fall of about 10 square meters of its main façade and its crack, and from the city of Salamiyah, according to reports received by the Directorate of Antiquities, 1 meter fell from the upper part of the minaret of the Imam Ismail Mosque, which led to a crack in the facade of the mosque due to the fall of the parts mentioned on it. Parts of the outer walls of Shmemis Castle, estimated at 10 square meters, were seen.

In Tartous, the Directorate received information about damage to some buildings inside Al-Marqab Castle, and minor and moderate damages, including the fall of parts of the stones of some walls or the facades of buildings, including the fall of a block from a round tower on the northern side, where the northern circle towers are.

The tremor also led to the fall of the rocky cliff in the vicinity of Al-Qadmous Castle and the collapse of some residential buildings located in the castle's precincts.

In Homs governorate, to date, no accurate information has been received about any damage to archaeological and historical sites, as well as the ancient city of Palmyra, and it is known so far that the minaret of the Great Mosque in Al-Qusayr has completely fallen.

It is noteworthy that the survey work needs more time due to the prevailing weather conditions.
