Transport Minister Miri Regev presented the main points of her public transport reform.
According to the plan, young people aged 18-26 will receive a significant discount of 33%;
Veterans will enjoy free travel from the moment of release and women from the age of 62 and men from the age of 67 will travel for free on public transport.
"It's no secret that I opposed from day one the reform introduced by my predecessor in office - a failed reform called "an equal path" - which is anything but an equal path," said Regev at the beginning of her remarks.
"She is not egalitarian and looks at everything through the hole of the divorced and it will not be in my school. I have said this all along - we will make sure that public transportation is available to all citizens of the State of Israel and certainly that the periphery will not finance or subsidize the center of the country."
According to data presented by Regev and the Ministry of Transportation, traffic jams cost the Israeli economy about NIS 35 billion a year and air pollution costs another NIS 7 billion a year.
According to her, "By 2030, the cost of traffic jams will cost the Israeli economy 70 billion shekels a year - this is a reality we cannot afford to live with, and we as a government need to provide a holistic solution - we are done with it."
Regev added that "we will give incentives that at the end of the day will encourage the citizens to use public transportation. When a citizen is standing at the station and the bus does not stop because it is full - this is an impossible reality if it even passes, so how do we as a country want to encourage public transportation and on the other hand are not ready Put money? And I say clearly and clearly to the finance officials as well, those who want to encourage public transportation should put money on it and it will return to the economy as an investment."
In her words, Regev also referred to the status of the driver and called for an increase in the driver's salary, an improvement in conditions, rest hours, refreshment stations and handling the issues of violence, including security.
The bus drivers' organization from the National Histadrut commented on the planned reform promoted by Minister of Transportation Regev: "We congratulate Minister Regev for the reform she is promoting. This is the first step in the way to create cheap, reliable and efficient public transportation. This step, along with improving the status of the driver, will increase the use in public transportation and will help reduce traffic jams. We will continue to work to enable free rides for drivers as well."
