In beans, ground or in capsules, here are the best coffees according to 60 million consumers

2023-02-07T20:32:04.822Z

The magazine 60 million consumers has carefully evaluated more than 50 coffee references. Here are the ones with the least pollutants.

Every morning, the same ritual.

As soon as they get up, a majority of French people prepare a steaming cup of coffee to start the day off right.

In grain, ground, in capsules… Faced with such a wide range of possibilities, it is difficult to assess the quality of their composition.

To track down pesticides, PAHs, acrylamide and other pollutants of our favorite drink, our colleagues from the magazine of the National Institute of Consumption (1) carried out a large-scale laboratory survey of 51 conventional, organic or fair trade references.

The best coffee in capsules

Capsules reign supreme in the coffee market.

If their use is practical, it is far from being ecological, representing a real headache during recycling.

However, their popularity is not weakening: 67% of French people prepare their "little black" using a pod or capsule.

At the top of the ranking, with a score of 18/20 and sold for €2.54 for 10 capsules, Espresso coffee from the Auchan Bio brand stands out for its low levels of undesirable components, such as PAHs and acrylamides.

Espresso coffee from Auchan Bio wins first place in the ranking of the best capsule coffees.

Roasting VS pesticides

On the pesticide side, none of the 51 references tested has any residues.

The coffee lover escapes these pollutants thanks to the roasting carried out around 200°C.

On the other hand, roasting forms PAHs, recognized as being carcinogenic.

The best coffee beans

This past year, the sale of coffee beans and ground coffees has jumped 30%.

If they represent an ideal alternative from an ecological point of view, certain references conceal an excess of foreign bodies.

Insects, plant residues… These are the unpleasant surprises that can be discovered under an optical microscope, unappetizing, although presenting no health risk.

Some brands still manage to come out on top. With a score of 18.5/20, Ecuador Intensity 3 Arabica coffee from the Ethiquable brand climbs to the top of the podium.

Hailed for its low levels of pollutants, it is sold at a price of €3.89 for 250 g.

On the coffee bean side, Ethiquable's Ecuador Intensity 3 Arabica coffee rose to the top of the podium.

The best decaffeinated coffee

To obtain a decaffeinated coffee, the caffeine content must not exceed 0.1% of the dry weight.

On four references analyzed, the caffeine levels exceed half of the authorized threshold.

Some have a large amount of insect fragments, the result of incomplete sorting.

In addition, the ten references evaluated contain traces of solvent, which is harmless considering their small quantity.

The Monoprix brand won first place with a score of 15/20 for its decaffeinated coffee, sold at a price of €3.09 for 10 capsules.

Monoprix coffee rises to the top of the podium in the decaffeinated coffee category.
