The blocking of a vital axis for the supply of the Nagorny Karabakh region risks rekindling the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed Tuesday, February 7 to his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliev "

his deep concern about the blockage

" of a vital axis for the supply of Nagorny Karabakh, and said he was ready to work on a solution "

in emergency

".

In a phone call, "

the head of state reiterated his deep concern about the blocking of the Lachin corridor and its serious humanitarian consequences

", reported the French presidency.

"

He said he was ready to help find a solution as a matter of urgency

," added the Élysée, seeming to propose a new mediation by Emmanuel Macron, who also reaffirmed "

Problem of access to food and medicine

Blocking the Lachin corridor risks reigniting the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorny Karabakh, a territory that Baku and Yerevan are fighting over.

Since mid-December, Azerbaijanis posing as environmental activists demonstrating against illegal mines have been blocking a crucial road linking Armenia to Nagorny Karabakh, a territory populated by Armenians.

Due to the blockage, the separatist enclave of some 120,000 inhabitants is facing power and internet cuts, as well as problems with heating and access to food and medicine.

The French president, who wants to be on the diplomatic front line in this conflict but had remained relatively discreet publicly since a previous call to Ilham Aliev on December 23, has been trying in recent days to regain the initiative.

On Monday, he called Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to assure him of his “

total commitment to Armenia's security

”.

He added that lifting the corridor blockade was a “

priority

”.

At the same time, Germany has also stepped up, invoking the “

joint responsibility

” of “

Azerbaijan and Russia

” in the case of the blockade of Nagorny Karabakh.

Armenia has repeatedly accused the Russian peacekeepers deployed in this territory of not having done enough to prevent this blockage.
