Munich – A gay man who lives in the village with his spouse, dog and two small children: these attributes don't necessarily go together in conservative Bavaria.

But Daniel Nawrot wants to break with prejudices about homosexuals and is a candidate for the casting show GAY: Mr Gay Germany 2023.

In an interview with

tz.de

, he reveals how the people around Munich react to his family and why he wants to appear on television and social media as a gay father.

"It's actually the case that we live in a small village here and people took a look at first.

I think that's always the case when something is out of the norm," says the 30-year-old, who has earned a high income selling luxury vacuum cleaners.

But he takes the attention calmly: "Basically, we don't care what the others say, we just do our thing."

Our thing is that he and his husband Roman, in addition to their job selling vacuum cleaners, use social media to educate people about rainbow families.

With success: Daniel Nawrot has almost 50,000 followers on Instagram.

Only recently did he receive a positive letter from a follower: "From a man who used to be homophobic.

He said he couldn't do anything with it, he also condemned people who are homosexual.

And then he came across our accounts by accident and was kind of excited about us.”

News like this gives him courage: “It is precisely through our work on social media that we reach many people who then really see it as the new normal.

That's why we do so much public relations work to create a different image.” He and his husband adopted their twins, Melodie and Romeo, three years ago.

The family lives together in a luxurious house near Munich, with a pool and two Mercedes in the driveway.

But the children go to kindergarten as normal, says Dany.

However, he must have been a bit worried about how other families and educators would react to the rainbow family: “You always have discussions with parents.

We also asked whether the children would say something, or the parents.

There really isn't any room for discrimination or anything.” For him, openness is the best strategy for straight away eliminating prejudice and explaining alternative family forms.

“We have few corner points.

We get into very, very good conversations with a lot of people.” However, he does not want to rule out the fact that there are whispers about him behind his back: “There are definitely people here in town who say: 'Mei, look at those two .

Do they need children now?'

But they might also say that to heterosexual couples who already have three children.”

"Did you leave the women at home"?

Dany experiences misunderstandings every day

When he is out and about in Munich with his children and Roman, sometimes absurd conversations arise: "Then people sometimes say: 'Mei, have you left the women at home for once?

Now only the men alloa on the way?'” Sometimes he would clarify the situation, but sometimes he left it at that and simply said: “Yes, exactly.” He experiences such misunderstandings every day.

That is precisely why it is important to him that the LGBTQ+ community (which stands for: lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer) appears publicly in all its diversity.

"You don't just have this typical bird of paradise that you used to see on TV when I was little, for example.

And then you were afraid: Ah, no, I'm not gay because I don't want to be a bird of paradise." If he had seen people like himself as a teenager, with a long-term relationship and a family of his own, it would have been a lot easier for him to to stand by his own gayness.

Family man is in the final of Mr. Gay Germany 2023

In any case, Dany has self-confidence for the casting show: “Up until now, there has never been a married MR GAY GERMANY with a father and a successful entrepreneur.

And also very young and good-looking.

All in one,” he says and laughs.

Whether he can outperform the four other finalists and win the title for himself can be seen on joyn.de from Thursday, February 9th.
