Officially, everything is fine.
The stay of Saïd Chengriha, the first Algerian chief of staff to go to France on an official visit, at the end of January, was, by unanimous opinion in Paris and Algiers,
“went extremely well”.
The official Algerian press even evoked in almost euphoric terms, in any case assumed - which, speaking of France, is rare enough to be noted -,
"a military and security cooperation which makes no secret".
As for the French and Algerian presidents, between two high-profile phone calls, there is only talk between them of
"friendship",
the state visit to France by Abdelmadjid Tebboune, announced for May, to complete the loop of this
"new era of the bilateral relationship".
Officially, therefore, everything is fine.
But, in private, the smiles are strained.
At the end of August 2022, after a hard-fought three-day visit, Emmanuel Macron left Algeria full of hugs with his counterpart, and with hope in his wake...
