At least
40 people died and a dozen were injured
as a result of
land displacements
that occurred in various towns in the province of Camaná,
Arequipa
region , in southern
Peru
.
Wilson Gutiérrez, Civil Defense official of the Mariano Nicolás Valcárcel municipality, confirmed to the RPP radio station that some
200 prefabricated houses were devastated by
the avalanche in Secocha, one of the main affected towns.
In this context, the regional governor of Arequipa,
Rohel Sánchez
, reported that he will request the declaration of
an emergency zone
for the damage caused in up to seven provinces in the region.
In addition, he confirmed that he will send rescue brigades to help with the rescue tasks and support materials to care for the
nearly 2,000 affected families
.
Meanwhile,
he did not rule out that the number of fatalities will rise in the next few
hours, given that a lot of mining activity takes place in the affected hills: "We probably have people there who have not been able to leave the mines that have been devastated by the mudslides" .
Among the towns that were affected by this landslide, as a result of the intense rains registered over the weekend in the region, are Pampaylima, Venado de Oro, Infiernillo, San Martín, Miski and Secocha, located in the district of Mariano Nicolás Valcárcel.
