The commander who threw a smoke grenade at his soldiers last week during tunnel training of the Yehalam unit will be sent to a military prison for 20 days. Following the incident, which was first published in Vala, ten soldiers from the unit were evacuated to the hospital in a minor condition after suffering from smoke inhalation.
An IDF spokesperson said In response: "After an in-depth investigation led by the unit's commander, it was decided to prosecute the commander who threw the grenade during training. The lessons of the investigation will be incorporated into the unit's training and it will continue to conduct high-quality training under close supervision and safety control."
The Yalam unit is defined as a special unit that includes a bomb disposal unit, a unit that specializes in breaking into buildings, a unit that specializes in combat sabotage and water crossing for commando fighters and a unit that specializes in tunnel warfare.

This is not the only safety incident that has recently occurred in the IDF. A week ago, a disaster was averted at the Shizphon base in the Arava, after armor instructors fired a shell during a field training exercise, which exploded only 50 meters away from the soldiers - so it was announced in Vala. No one was injured in the incident.
