They find in Florida 2 children reported as kidnapped almost a year ago and detain their mother, who did not have custody

Two Missouri children abducted nearly a year ago were found by authorities while at a supermarket in central Florida.

(CNN Spanish) --

Two children from the state of Missouri kidnapped almost a year ago were found by the authorities while they were in a supermarket in central Florida.

The High Springs Police Department reported in a statement that the minors were found last week with their alleged kidnapper, who is their mother but does not have legal custody.

The agents found the minors when, when checking the tags of the vehicles in the parking lot, they realized that the owner of one of them was a fugitive.

Police identified Kristi Gilley as the alleged kidnapper, and arrested her because she was under a warrant for kidnapping, which had been issued in July 2022 and is still active.

Gilley and the children, who are now 11 and 12 years old, were last seen on March 15, 2022.

Police say they managed to track them down inside the store while they were allegedly trying to hide their identities, though it's unclear how they tried to do so.

According to High Springs Police, Gilley was arrested and remains in jail on a kidnapping charge in Clay County, Missouri, north of Kansas.

The children are in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families, a state agency charged with caring for children and protecting them from abuse and neglect.

At this time, it is unknown why Gilley did not have custody of the children or if he will face other charges.

The Police Department told CNN that they do not know if the defendant has a lawyer and that for now they have no more to report.

Gilley has not yet been brought before a court, so it is unknown how she pleads for herself.
