From television interviews to warnings published on his Twitter page with a million subscribers, the Turkish seismologist Naci Görür has been calling for several years for increased
“vigilance”
in the Kahramanmaras region, epicenter of the disaster on Monday, February 6.
“It's a place prone to earthquakes.
Risk reduction measures must be taken now”,
he declared in November 2022 on the set of CNN Türk.
A few days ago, he expressed surprise in the pages of the
Cumhuriyet
newspaper that, with the approach of the May 14 elections, a plan to build 250,000 social housing units had been announced, without the authorities worrying about the
"hundreds of thousands of buildings very exposed"
to seismic risk.
"Nobody listened to me,"
he laments today.
