Produce electricity in the city and for its inhabitants.

This is what the municipality of Mérignac (Gironde), the second largest city in the Bordeaux metropolis, does.

Two new sites were commissioned in early February, in addition to the three existing facilities, in order "

to produce and consume renewable and local energy

".

The new solar panels are installed on the elementary school and the leisure center of Burck, as well as on the house of the inhabitants and the school complex of La Glacière.

The combined power of these two stations is equivalent to the consumption of approximately 150 homes.

With the help of Enedis, these buildings are in collective self-consumption: the energy they produce is consumed directly.

The electricity thus produced is intended to supply municipal buildings, but not only.

"

By developing sufficient renewable energy production capacity on one or more sites, the city can distribute part of its production to other nearby facilities

such as nurseries

, gymnasiums or restaurant foyers, but also to benefit from this production to private individuals or companies, such as the home for young workers at La Glacière, for example

”, explains the municipality.

“Energy autonomy of the territory”

An associative structure has also been set up to ensure the organization of this collective self-consumption: MERCI (Mérignac Énergies Renouvelables Citoyennes Innovation).

It is chaired by the deputy mayor, Gérard Chausset.

"

In order to fight against energy poverty, the city has the possibility of selling the electricity produced free

of charge " to the inhabitants of Mérignac who are members of this organization, "

or of guaranteeing a controlled selling price excluding fluctuations in the sales market. of energy

”.

These installations go hand in hand with the new biomass boiler room, inaugurated on January 23 in Mérignac, not far from the new nautical stadium.

Ultimately, this four-kilometer network will heat around twenty buildings with renewable energy, 80% of which comes from wood combustion

,” rejoices the Gironde municipality.

Heating networks are an effective and economical solution for producing large quantities of renewable energy that is sometimes difficult to access for a single building.

On the territory of the metropolis, twelve heating networks in operation have been identified.

The community wishes to “

develop, modernize, extend and diversify them over the next few years

as a prospect an energy autonomy of the territory
