Faced with a lack of personnel, the Ancenis hospital must once again close its emergency department at night, reopening in early January, from February 10. The next day, a demonstration bringing together unions and the population is planned.

for the inhabitants of the Ancenis sector (Loire-Atlantique), a town located about forty kilometers east of Nantes.

They will again have to do without the emergency department of the local hospital every night (between 5 p.m. and 8:30 a.m.) from February 10.

This is far from a first.

This was already the case for a month last summer.

Same thing in November and December.

A glimmer of hope had taken place at the beginning of January with a reopening allowed by

“staff planning management”

.

It will therefore have been short-lived.

A fragile situation caused by a recurring lack of staff.

An observation that the director of the health establishment, Sandrine Delage, knows only too well, who regrets it: “

We published announcements, used our networks but nothing helped.

We have not received any applications.

We expected it a little so much the tension in the medical demography is strong.

The hospital is looking for three professionals - doctors and nurses - who can come and work there full-time or according to a schedule shared with the Nantes University Hospital.

In the meantime, its director must make do with the means at hand.

Closed for an indefinite period

Without reinforcement on the horizon, Sandrine Delage is unable to give a date for a return to full activity.

Emergency rooms at night are therefore closed for an

“indefinite period”

.

Should residents fear a permanent closure?

“It is still too early to tell.

The problem is deep.

Despite this complex situation, the director of the hospital

and

to meet the needs of the population.

Coordination with general practitioners in the town and the Samu center has already been in place for several months.

It allows residents to go to a medical care center (after being directed there by an Samu operator), open Monday to Friday from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Outside these hours, patients are sent by the Samu to a nearby emergency service or invited to return the next morning to Ancenis hospital depending on the seriousness of their state of health.

Residents mobilized

For the inhabitants of the sector, the situation is difficult to live with.

They are mobilizing to obtain a rapid reopening of the night service.

A petition was launched last fall by a citizen collective.

It has already collected more than 4500 signatures.

A demonstration is also planned on their initiative this Saturday, in which the local branch of the CGT will participate.

The union, the majority in this health establishment, wants in particular to denounce

“the reduction in the supply of care in the basin of Ancenis”

.

Sandrine Delage.

She even says she is

“grateful”

for the fight led by the inhabitants:

“It shows their attachment to their hospital, which warms our hearts.”

For her part, she is struggling to find a new organization that would allow the emergency service to be maintained at least until 8 p.m., instead of 5 p.m. as currently planned.
