Ukraine's top national security official told Reuters that a renewed Russian offensive could include attempts to capture the cities of Kharkiv or Zaporizhia, major urban centers that Russian forces have never occupied.

"Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, told Reuters: "Of course there will be offensive attempts in Kharkiv or Zaporizhia.

How successful they are will depend on us."

Russia controls a large part of the Zaporizhia region, but has never captured the city itself.

Both Kharkiv and Zaporizhia have been subjected to regular missile fire by Russia over the past year.

In an interview with CNN on Monday, Danilov admitted that Ukraine was "worried" about a Russian offensive.

"But I insist that we are preparing together with our partners," he declared.

"Now good preparations are being made so that if the Russian offensive starts, it will not succeed."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Joe Biden for his support of Ukraine on Wednesday during the US president's State of the Union address to Congress.

"Thank you @POTUS for the powerful words of support for [Ukraine] as he addressed the nation," Zelensky said on Twitter.

"We are grateful for the [US] leadership in helping [Ukraine], for the solidarity of all the [American] people. Our values are the same, our common goal is victory. [Ukraine] freely chooses its future. That's right and it will".

Last year, Biden delivered his State of the Union address just days after Russian leader Vladimir Putin launched his brutal war on Ukraine.

And in his speech on Tuesday, Biden reaffirmed America's continued support for Kyiv.

"A murderous assault, conjuring up images of the death and destruction Europe suffered in World War II," Biden said.

"Putin's invasion has been a test for the times. A test for America. A test for the world."
