Loire-Atlantique: an employer fined €75,000 after a fatal work accident

A long delay for the relatives of the victim.

On Monday, the court of Saint-Nazaire (Loire-Atlantique) handed down its decision regarding a work accident that occurred on October 22, 2018 on the site of the Montoir-de-Bretagne LNG terminal.

That day, a 45-year-old man lost his life after being hit by a 2.5-tonne steel pipe that suddenly detached from a crane.

This individual was an employee of NGE Fondations, a subcontractor which works on this industrial site located on the edge of the Loire.

Insecure maneuver?

This company was sentenced by the courts for manslaughter as reported by

She will have to pay a fine of €75,000, an amount close to that required by the public prosecutor, namely €100,000.

According to our colleagues, during a previous hearing which took place on January 10, the public prosecutor had pointed out a maneuver which

“was not likely to preserve the safety of employees”

The defense had recalled that

"the safety officer had not reported anything"

and that a report

"indicated that everything was up to standard"
