A charger and ammunition from a weapon were found Monday in the backpack of a 5-year-old student at an elementary school in the city of Syracuse (New York), authorities reported.
The discovery took place at Porter Elementary School, a spokesman for the Syracuse School District said in a joint statement with local police.
"Ammunition and a charger were found in the backpack of a 5-year-old student," the text detailed.
“Until now, it seems that the student was unaware of the presence of the objects
(in his bag).
The investigation is still active.
No weapon was found,” he stated.

The minor is a

student , according to police.
The school district spokesman did not respond to questions about who may have placed the magazine and ammunition in the student's backpack, or whether the boy knew he brought them to school with him.

Authorities did not respond to a request for comment, and a person who answered the phone at the elementary school where the incident occurred also did not offer further information Tuesday.
A month ago, a 6-year-old student injured his first-grade teacher while teaching a class at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia.

The teacher, Abigail Zwerner, who was considered a hero, as she evacuated the classroom and brought about 20 students in her class to safety after being seriously injured in the chest and hand.
The school and district have come under fire over the shooting after it became public that the teacher tipped off the boy was armed.
Some officials have been laid off and changes have been made to the direction of the school.
The school district promised that it would install at least one metal detector in every school.
