Opinion Ladies and gentlemen, the Knesset is not respected: the MKs must serve as an example for everyone | Israel Today

Despite the past cases, the expectations of the members of the Knesset are actually higher in the current period, when there is a wave of severe violence outside • The MKs will not be able to denounce violence if they are violent themselves

Monday was a special day in the Knesset.

Two significant events were combined between them: the birthday of the Knesset and Tu Beshvat. The atmosphere around the Mishkan was great.

In honor of Tu Beshvat, the Knesset was filled with stalls, which displayed different varieties of strawberries from the Land of Israel, fine Israeli olive oil, and beautiful flowers. In honor of the birthday, the Knesset was opened to everyone who celebrated a birthday that day, and many schools and children came to see the Israeli Parliament. Only a place One was much less solemn - the Knesset plenary itself.

Supreme President Hayut and State President Herzog yesterday in the Knesset,

It started with the ceremonial debate attended by the President of the State and the President of the Supreme Court, who sat in front of naked benches and an almost empty plenary, and continued with members of the Knesset who could not hold back and respect the status, and called interjections both towards Prime Minister Netanyahu and towards the opposition leader Lapid.

Disrespect of empty chairs

What started with the disrespect of empty chairs, continued in the dead of night with the exchange of verbal blows between MKs Nissim Vatori and Ofer Kasif. Physical blows between Kasif and MK Almog Cohen were also not far away, and were avoided thanks to the Knesset ushers.

Something bad is happening to the Knesset

Perhaps it is the long days and nights in the Knesset, which cause the nerves of the MKs to loosen. Perhaps it is the edges that have sharpened between national right-wing parties such as Ben Gabir's and those of Tibi, Odeh and Kasif. Perhaps it is the hot atmosphere outside that penetrates into the Israeli parliament. In any case - something Evil passes over the Knesset.

True, this is not a new thing, since time immemorial the Knesset of Israel has been a noisy, boisterous and loud place.

There is no Israeli who does not know the phrase "don't shout, this is not the Knesset".

In the past, there were quite a few heated incidents: eight bouncers separated Tibi and Gabir, former Knesset Speaker Miki Levy and MK Simcha Rothman almost exchanged blows in the farce area, and Anastasia Michaeli poured a glass of water on Ralav Majadala.

Shouting in the Knesset.

MK Gottlieb,

MK Distel-Atbarian. How do you say? "Don't shout here, this is not the Knesset",

Despite these past cases, the expectations of members of the Knesset are actually higher in the current period.

Outside there is a wave of serious violence: a stabbing at a crosswalk, pulling a machete on a family with a child, a disorderly attack on a main road with a helmet.

Precisely in a period like this, more is expected of the elected officials.

They will not be able to speak out and denounce violence if they are the ones who will be violent.

They are the ones who must serve as an example to everyone.
