The Sakurajima volcano in Kagoshimiya Prefecture, southwestern Japan, erupted today, spewing plumes of ash into the air.

The Chinese news agency, Xinhua, quoted the Meteorological Office in Kagoshmiya: The eruption, which is the first in the Showa crater since April 2018, was monitored at 10:52 local time, with ash columns reaching a height of 1,000 meters at 11:10.

In turn, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a warning of the second level on a scale consisting of five levels, indicating that it is likely to raise the warning level to the third in the event of increased volcanic activity.

The agency called on residents living in the vicinity of the volcano to be careful and alert of lava flows and falling rocks.

Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan.
