Spanish personalities and Syrian expatriates in Spain have called for lifting the unfair and unilateral coercive measures imposed by Western countries on the Syrian people, and to help them get out of their ordeal after the devastating earthquake that struck Syria the day before yesterday.

Pablo Sabbagh, a professor at Complutense State University in Madrid and an expert in Syrian history and international relations, stressed that the current suffering of the Syrian people shows and reveals the true face of the United States and European countries, in their endeavor to increase this suffering, by continuing the unilateral coercive measures they imposed.

Sabbagh added that had it not been for these arbitrary measures that violate international law, many lives could have been saved, and the infrastructure in Syria would have been in a better position to deal with this natural disaster, stressing that there are millions of people around the world who are in solidarity with Syria at the present time, but they cannot send Material or financial aid due to these arbitrary coercive measures that prevent banking transactions to and from Syria, in violation of the most basic human rights under the current circumstances.

For his part, the Director of the Spanish Geopolitical Institute, Juan Antonio Aguilar, expressed full solidarity with the Syrian people in these tragic moments and the suffering they are going through due to the devastating earthquake, declaring his readiness with many Spanish citizens to help this people overcome their ordeal.

Aguilar said, "It is our moral duty to condemn the notorious and miserable position of Western governments by maintaining sanctions that only harm the Syrian people at all levels, especially at this time when their needs are increasing," explaining that these sanctions, which violate international law, reveal the hypocrisy of the so-called European values ​​that only hide the colonial desires and ambitions and the imperial policy of the United States that continues to illegally occupy Syrian lands and plunder its natural resources.

Aguilar called on the governments of the European Union, particularly the Spanish government, to respect international law and lift unfair and coercive sanctions on Syria, and to move forward in sending urgent humanitarian aid to the Syrian people who are now suffering from a natural disaster.

In turn, the journalist and analyst in the geopolitical affairs of the Middle East and Africa, Koldo Salsar Lopez, confirmed that what the US administration and its European followers have done against Syria cannot be called sanctions, because it is not issued by the UN Security Council, and therefore the Syrian people suffer from illegal and illegitimate collective restrictive measures. Led by the United States, which uses this tool to coerce and blackmail countries and nations and undermine their sovereignty.

Lopez expressed his condolences to the Syrian people for the earthquake disaster, calling for the lifting of these coercive restrictions that prevent Syrians from their natural and legitimate right to access foodstuffs, medicines and basic health services in flagrant violation of the rules of international law and basic principles of human rights.

The Syrian expatriate and head of the Association of Syrian-Spanish businessmen in Andalusia, Fawzi Kanafani, indicated that this disaster shook the feelings and hearts of all Syrian expatriates, expressing his condolences to all the families of the victims in the homeland, and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.

Kanafani denounced the policy of double standards pursued by Western countries towards the Syrian people, and their imposition of an unfair siege on them, calling for the lifting of these brutal and immoral coercive measures imposed by the US administration and its allies in the European Union, because they impede the Syrian government's endeavors and efforts to get out of this disaster and obtain equipment. To search for survivors, and to provide the necessary medical services and humanitarian aid.

For his part, the Patriarchal Vicar of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch in Spain, His Eminence Archbishop Mar Nicholas Matta Abd al-Ahad, stressed that the international community must help the Syrian people to get out of the repercussions of this disaster that struck the country, and the provision of humanitarian aid must also be accelerated and the Syrian government's work to obtain The necessary devices and equipment to save the injured.

The bishop denounced the lies of European countries and America against Syria, calling on all churches and mosques in the world to raise their voice to put an end to the barbaric, immoral and inhumane sanctions imposed by the West against the Syrian people and their government.

The head of the Anti-Imperialist Committee in Catalonia, Doctor Manuel Sarkis, expressed full solidarity with the Syrian motherland, its people, and its leadership in this ordeal and catastrophe that struck the country.
