From December 29 last year to January 30 this year, the victim transferred a total of about 12 million yuan to 16 bank accounts designated by the other party.

After he failed to get back the money, he began to suspect that he had been cheated and reported the case to the police.

In the incident, the victim lost a total of about 12.8 million yuan.

After a preliminary investigation, the case was listed as obtaining property by deception and was handed over to Team 3 of the Criminal Investigation Team of the Eastern District Police District for follow-up. No one has been arrested yet.

It is understood that the victim himself is an investment manager, and the scammer claims to be an investment expert in cryptocurrency. The two developed into online lovers through Whatsapp.

Later, the scammer lured the victim to invest in cryptocurrency on a false platform. The victim transferred a huge amount of money to 16 local banks and FPS accounts provided by the scammer for investment purposes, but later failed to withdraw the profit return.

The defrauded amount was the inheritance left by the victim's father.

The police reiterated that anyone who commits the crime of "obtaining property by deception" under Section 12 of the Theft Ordinance, Chapter 210 of the Laws of Hong Kong, is liable to a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.
