Passarella returns to the Monumental: it will be part of River's tribute to the world champions

2023-02-09T15:57:09.162Z

The former soccer player accepted the invitation amid the controversy linked to the 2011 relegation, when he was president.

Daniel Passarella accepted

River

's invitation

and confirmed that he will be at the tribute that is being prepared for the world champions this Sunday, at the

Monumental

, in what will be the club's first home game since Argentina obtained its third star in the World Cup. from Qatar.

The appointment will be on Sunday 12 at 7:15 p.m. when Martín Demichelis's team receives Argentinos Juniors, for the third date of the Professional League.

Passarella confirmed this to the club's Public Relations area, in charge of organizing the tribute to the champions, and to his closest entourage.

According to what he reported, his family would have suggested that he not be part of the entertainment for fear of possible rejection by the public present.

According to the information that emerged in Núñez, Passarella asked for a box to share with his family and a group of close friends, with the intention of staying to watch the game, in which will undoubtedly be one of the 2023 postcards for Argentine football and in recent years for the River world.

The presence of the former soccer player, two-time world champion with the National Team (the only Argentine with that label) in 1978 and 1986, was a source of controversy in the previous one.

It is that it will be his return to Núñez since December 2013, when he finished his cycle as president of the institution, forever marked by the historic decline of 2011.

Passarella did not set foot in the club anymore.

And he left behind his legend of "Great Captain" to retire into ostracism punctuated only by brief and isolated comebacks.

One was at the funeral of Alejandro Sabella, his assistant in France 1998. Another last year, when he gave a report for an Italian media outlet denying issues related to his health.

The last one, last Saturday when he went out to the field of Sarmiento de Junín, the club that saw him born, with the World Cup in his arms.

Now it will be River's turn and the chance to close a wound that obviously remains open despite the fact that the club managed to recover its lost glory very quickly after the arrival of Rodolfo D'Onofrio, Marcelo Gallardo, a golden era of footballers and this present auspicious with Jorge Brito at the helm of the club.

It will not only be Passarella

River will honor

Franco Armani

, its current world champion, and

Pablo Aimar

and

Roberto Ayala

, members of the 'Scaloneta' coaching staff with a past at River;

Norberto Alonso

,

Ubaldo Fillol

,

Oscar Ortíz

(1978);

Oscar Ruggeri

,

Hector Enrique

and

Nery

Pumpido (1986).

The recent champions in Qatar, Armani, Aimar and Ayala, will receive plaques and medals

and those in charge of delivering them will be those consecrated in 1978 and 1986

.

Pumpido will not be able to be there since he will be on a trip fulfilling duties as assistant general secretary of soccer for Conmebol.

And there will be a special mention of

Leopoldo Luque

(another representative of River in the 1978 National Team), who passed away almost two years ago.
