Republicans on imposter George Santos: "He shouldn't be in Congress"

2023-02-09T00:02:26.458Z

George Santos at least doctored his CV, probably even outright lied. Nevertheless, he represents the Republicans in Congress. This causes anger in their own ranks – also with Mitt Romney.

The pressure on George Santos has been tremendous for weeks.

There are calls for the Republican member of the House of Representatives to resign from all sides – including from his own party.

The background to this are the considerable discrepancies in the politician's curriculum vitae.

The Congressional Ethics Committee is also considering the case.

And the Federal Police FBI also has questions for the 34-year-old about possible misappropriation of donations.

Santos is still stubbornly refusing to resign.

Now one of the party grandees has publicly positioned himself against the young politician.

Mitt Romney met Santos on the sidelines of President Joe Biden's State of the Union address.

The encounter lasted only a few seconds.

Afterwards, the 2012 presidential candidate explained that he had given Santos his point of view in no uncertain terms.

"He shouldn't be in Congress," Romney said.

"Now the trial is underway and I hope he won't be here soon." Santos certainly shouldn't have been shaking hands and making small talk so eagerly, Romney said: "He should have sat back and kept his mouth shut."

New York politicians becomes clear

So far, the Republican party leadership has been noticeably reluctant to call for his resignation.

This is probably also related to the narrow majority in the House of Representatives.

After his embarrassing election in January, party leader Kevin McCarthy is dependent on support from his own ranks.

Other Republicans, on the other hand, find very clear words about the "party friend".

"He's a sociopath," Nick LaLota told US broadcaster CNN on Wednesday.

Like Santos, LaLota represents a portion of New York State in the House.

'He's looking for attention.

Even the negative attention drives him on.

It's an embarrassment and disruption to Republicans in the House," LaLota said.

Every time the party has to deal with Santos, they lose an opportunity to do politics.
