After an extremely dry winter, a rather winter system hit Israel A rather winter system • The data of the meteorological service shows that in addition to the heavy precipitation, the wind was also particularly strong and even reached a speed of more than 100 km/h • The snow fell mainly on the peaks of the Golan • In Hermon its depth reaches to 2 meters

This week our area was hit by a system of stormy weather, which received the name "Barbara", as part of the European project for naming significant storms.

The storm brought with it very strong winds with gusts of more than 100 km/h, large amounts of rain and snow in the northern mountains and the peaks of the central mountains. In addition, the stormy weather resulted in flooding and damage throughout the country. Now, the meteorological service reveals the extent of the winter campaign.

the strength of the wind

During the last few days a very deep depression moved eastward from the area of Greece and Crete to our area.

It caused the strongest winds felt, reaching maximum speeds of 50 to 70 km/h and gusts of more than 100 km/h.

In several places extremely high speeds were measured, for example in Safed Mount Canaan a maximum wind speed of 87 km/h and a maximum gust of 119 km/h were measured;

In the cliffs there is a wind speed of 78 km/h and a maximum gust of 113 km/h.

the amounts of rainfall

During the storm, the largest amounts of rain fell in the central mountains and the northern lowlands, where 100 to 150 mm were measured. Due to the strong winds, heavy rain was also measured east of the watershed (Ma'ale Adumim 111 mm, Gatit 103 mm). In the north of the Golan and in the Galilee In the Upper Galilee, impressive amounts of 80 to 110 mm were measured and in the Lower Galilee, in the south of the Golan, in the northern valleys, 40 to 70 mm were measured.

In the northern and central coastal plain, 30 to 50 mm were measured and larger amounts of 60 to 90 mm were measured in the southern and northern coastal plain surrounding Gaza.

In the northwest of the Negev, in the Yatir region and the Bashur region, 30 to 50 mm fell and the amount of rain decreased to the south, so that in the north of the Negev about 20 mm fell, in the center of the Negev 5 to 10 mm and south of there almost no rain fell.

The amounts of rain since the beginning of the season

The rains that fell during the event, as well as the heavy rains that have fallen since the end of January, have considerably reduced the deficit in the rain that existed before, so that in many parts of the country the accumulated amounts of rain since the beginning of the season reach 80% to 90% of the average for the corresponding period.

There are places where the amounts are close to the average and even exceed it, such as the Judean Mountains, the south of the coastal plain and the east of the Jezreel Valley.

More detailed data on the rain situation since the beginning of the season will be given tomorrow with the rain summary of the last ten days.
