The reason why the kelpers are angry with the Argentine government

2023-02-09T16:15:25.833Z

The Foreign Ministry did not agree to enable the route from Brazil to the Malvinas Islands with a stopover in Córdoba and with Latam.

Relations between Kirchnerism and the United Kingdom are always in flux due to the sovereignty conflict over the

Malvinas Islands

.

And now they have been shaken again by the question of flights between the mainland and the archipelago, a clash made visible by the islanders expressing

their fury with the Argentine government.

"The Government of the Falkland Islands is very sad and disappointed to announce Argentina's refusal of the overflight permit for the weekly air link between the Islands and Brazil," began the statement from the Legislative Assembly on January 30.

In said text they also warned: "The Government of the Falkland Islands will look for other viable options, including those that do not require the Argentine overflight, but it will always be open to the restart of this air link."

The statement expressed its annoyance in relation to the lack of authorization by the Government of

Alberto Fernández

for them to resume a route negotiated by the administration of Mauricio Macri in 2019. This unite, with the Chilean airline Latam, San Pablo (Brazil), with the island airport of Mount Pleasant, on Wednesdays and with a monthly stopover in the city of Córdoba, one outbound and one on the return-.

As if that were not enough, the messages from Argentina were also extended at the military level.

This Tuesday, the Minister of Defense, Jorge Taiana, and the head of the Air Force, Brigadier General Xavier Issac

, led the reopening of the X Air Brigade and the repositioning of the IA-63 Pampa III Weapons System, which since 1996 had no fighter planes.

The X Brigade rises in Río Gallegos, Santa Cruz, for which reason Governor Alicia Kirchner was also present at the presentation ceremony.

The Brazil-Malvinas route took years to materialize.

It emerged as a plan in a 2016 British Argentine statement and operated very little.

It is that

it became effective in November 2019 and already in March 2020

it was suspended with the flight restrictions in the context of quarantines and closures of international airports with the coronavirus pandemic.

So it was the island government that suspended that route and also suspended the historic connection that operated in a scheme similar to that of Córdoba, but since 1999: that is, the Latam flights from Punta Arenas to Mount Pleasant, every Saturday and with a one way stopover once a month in Rio Gallegos and another return the following Saturday.

The islanders were

without an air connection for more than two years

, by their own decision and in a situation that, being 3,000 inhabitants, became unsustainable.

They wanted to enable the two flights, and especially the one in Córdoba, a weapon that the Argentine government used to pressure them from the beginning to achieve what they always demanded:

that the islanders accept that Aerolíneas Argentinas returns to the Malvinas and stops in Buenos Aires.

That would be a political achievement, but it was never accepted by the Falklands, which the UK gave a high degree of autonomy.

They were enabled for the flights from Chile that have been operating since July 2022, but not those that leave Brazil.

This was explained in the office of the secretary of the Malvinas Area,

Guillermo Carmona

That in December 2021, to "alleviate the disconnection situation of the Malvinas Islands", the Argentine government formulated a proposal to the United Kingdom for two flights with the flag line (it is understood as the national one, of course) from the Argentine continental territory.

They said that the "United Kingdom rejected such a proposal offering that the flights be carried out directly from Chile and with another flag line."

That after the British response, and having a significant Chilean population on the islands, the Argentine government offered that on their return trip to the continent, the flights (with the Argentine airline) could go directly to the Punta Arenas airport or some other alternative airport in Chile.

It was not accepted either.

"Despite this, the Argentine Government stated that it would keep it available until the regular flight from Punta Arenas is regularized and requested the prompt reestablishment of that regular flight, whose suspension is totally unjustified today."

That flight is crucial for the families of those killed in the 1982 war, who continue to make the "pilgrimage" to the Darwin cemetery where their loved ones are buried.

In Carmona's office they pointed out that there was a meeting with the British ambassador and the Deputy Director for the Americas of the Foreign Office, that the official "regretted that such flights could not have been carried out and recalled the need to resume the flight from Punta sands.”

But the Argentines only enabled the flight from Punta Arenas and never the one from San Pablo.

On the other hand, from the Malvinas said the counselor and spokesman for the Legislative Assembly, Mike Pollard accused Argentina of "denying them self-determination".

He said the country "takes every opportunity to impose sanctions on our people and collectively punish us for legitimately exercising our democratic rights. This latest move is yet another attempt to isolate us from South America and impede our economic development."
