"I suffer from burnout, like Sandra Bullock and Brad Pitt", commented the actress Graciela Borges when announcing that she decided to definitively move away from filming for this reason.
In an interview with the Télam news agency, Borges said that during his last works in the cinema he suffered sensations associated with
"work exhaustion"
.
Burnout or burned worker syndrome was included in 2019 by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its International Classification of Diseases (ICD).
The pressures, the exhausting days, the deadlines to fulfill that task that would require more time, exhaustion... just some of the causes that lead many to feel "burned out" by work.
In Argentina, according to recent surveys, it
is a widespread problem

Two new studies draw attention to the well-being of Argentines: in one of them, carried out by the Siglo 21 University, it is pointed out that
6 out of 10 are not happy
and that almost 4 out of 10 have
burnout
, that is, they feel "burned out" by work.
Meanwhile, in a survey carried out by Bumeran -the online job classifieds company- almost
9 out of 10 respondents
in Argentina
showed symptoms of burnout, the highest figure obtained in the region.
It is worrying that the most affected segment is the youngest: between 18 and 29 years old.

In both cases, the environment and
work demands
are presented as the main responsible for the increase in stress levels and young people are indicated as the most affected segment.
The results of the study by the 21st Century University confirm a trend detected a year ago, when the consequences of the
Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions derived from the health emergency
came into play in the analysis.
In the current work, the researchers used the "Satisfaction with Life Scale" (SWLS), an instrument that international organizations such as UNESCO and the World Health Organization (WHO) also consider for their studies. .
Based on the results obtained, they warned that
stress levels are increasing
, in parallel with the decrease in happiness.
What is and what is the impact of
burnout
The WHO defines this syndrome as a
general state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion
generated by situations of chronic stress in the workplace.
Among the causes of
burnout
at the local level, Bumeran indicates that
unfavorable work environments
, with a climate that they define as "toxic", is usually the main trigger.
“For example, when a company continuously exposes its collaborators to an
excessive
workload, when they have little autonomy, when they are not listened to or when there is a lack of support from the environment;
All these situations can cause work teams to always take work home, not being able to finish their tasks during working hours”, they state.
This results in working with high levels of anxiety, which results not only in a lack of motivation but also, paradoxically, in productivity.
They ask that the emotional be considered a strategic resource for the development of the country.

"Well-being is an essential requirement to work productively, develop talent and deal with daily stress. For this reason, this measurement warns about the consequences that not paying attention to this problem can generate," says Leonardo Medrano, vice-rector for Innovation, Research and Postgraduate from the 21st Century University and responsible for the study.
"The emotional is not considered a strategic resource for the development of the country and
that must change
. Systematic actions are needed on the part of organizations, companies and educational institutions aimed at promoting the well-being and happiness of the population," he adds.
The most stressed in the region
According to the Burnout Bumeran survey (a regional study based on the participation of 4,820 people, 1,258 from the country), Argentines are the most "burned" in the region, since
86%
say they experience
burnout
, a number that has
grown
compared to what which occurred in 2021. The average for the region is 81%.
But what do these hard-working people feel?
46
% experience a lack of energy
or extreme tiredness, 37% negativism or cynicism in relation to their work, 21% lack of efficiency to work and 44% all of the above.
Only 12% did not suffer from any of the sensations mentioned.
"Chronic emotional exhaustion" is associated with stress.

In addition, during the last year, the respondents state that they have gone through different negative situations in the work environment.
80
% feel stress
, 71% are unmotivated or unmotivated, 46% find it difficult to find time for themselves, 45% cannot disconnect from work and another 45% experience unusual exhaustion due to excessive workload. job.
Finally, in relation to the possible causes, 21% point out the lack of clarity regarding what their role implies and another 21% the work overload.
Most dissatisfied
The increase in stress and frustration levels appears as one of the most relevant conclusions in the study on "
Burnout
and Happiness" carried out by the university, through which they collected data from
more than a thousand people
between the ages of 18 and 65 years old who live in different regions of the country.
In this direction, the majority admits that they are not satisfied with their lives: what happens in
six out of ten cases.
Meanwhile,
only 42.9%
feel they have achieved "the important things" they want and only 32.8% are satisfied with most aspects of their lives.
It was among the youngest (between 18 and 29 years old) where the lowest levels of happiness were found, and the highest levels of chronic stress.
Going to the labor level, which has a strong influence on the results linked to stress, the high rate of
fatigue
in the active segment of the population is highlighted as a fact of no less: they ensure that
three out of ten people
express "chronic emotional exhaustion" associated with stress, which is associated with
burnout.
3 out of 10 are so tired that after work they cannot do recreational activities.

In this sense, 27% feel that "
they cannot relax
after work" and that "they are so tired that they cannot carry out other activities" and that "it is increasingly difficult for them to start a new working day".
One of the warnings that the institution stresses is that this group is twice as likely to experience a more severe mental disorder in the future, such as depression.
In turn, it concludes that
burnout
and frustration are directly proportional to the rise in two social indicators emerging from economic crises:
lower educational level
and lower wage income.
Tips for managing stress at work
Although most of the variables that affect the well-being of people are not easily manageable, since in many cases they exceed the will of the workers, Bumeran offers some guidelines to moderate work stress:
● Take
active breaks
: If you spend a long time in front of the computer, it is advisable to implement breaks that require some type of physical activity, in order to recover energy and avoid body fatigue caused by sitting for many hours.
Walking, fetching water, or taking a walk can help put mind and body in another tune for at least a few minutes.
● Listening to relaxing music while working can help us
release stress
, concentrate and regulate anxiety levels.
●
Define clear limits
and ask for help: the best way to avoid
burnout
is to communicate with leaders or bosses.
If it is perceived that working after hours has become the norm, or that the demands exceed the real possibilities of compliance, it is important to communicate this.
● In the case of
working from home
, it is important to establish schedules, respect them and enforce them.
Time with oneself and with loved ones is important, and if that time starts to run short, the first symptoms of burnout may begin to appear.
● Taking care
of the work environment
and making it pleasant adds to increase concentration and also motivation.
For example, it is advisable to have plants on the desk because, in addition to being decorative, they help to oxygenate the environment, increase air quality and provide energy.
Also using ergonomic chairs and supports for the computer and the mouse is very useful to take care of our posture.
"The important thing is to understand that the main thing is to take care of your health. Without that, there is no worthwhile work. You have to take care of yourself and always put yourself as a priority," they recommend, to close.
