Markt Schwaben has been named a bicycle-friendly municipality.

But that alone is not enough.

Action must follow.

Markt Schwaben -

We reported that it was with a certain joy that the market town of Markt Schwaben was included in the circle of bicycle-friendly municipalities in Bavaria.

However, this alone does not automatically make a municipality bike-friendly, as the municipal administration rightly stated in a press release supplied.

"We, the municipal council and the administration, are now under pressure," emphasizes Georg Holley, the local cycling and transport officer, when asked by EZ.

Under pressure to gradually make the place more bike-friendly from now on.

In the next four years, according to Holley, it will be important to follow up the nice declarations of intent with action.

Only then does the “bicycle-friendly municipality” certification become really important.

After another seven years, according to the retired physician, another recertification is in the pipeline: "Then we'll check again what's left."

But what can be done as soon as possible to make Markt Schwaben more attractive for cyclists?

A first step, according to Holley, has already been taken, but unfortunately we don't see anything of it yet.

For weeks, materials have been stored in the building yard that are needed to be able to set up a decent bike rack for up to 450 bicycles at the station (we reported).

The fact that nothing has happened to date has to do with the train.

Among other things, it is about distances to a power pole.

There is a need for action in many places in the market town

According to Holley, a cycle path concept has already been launched – in cooperation with the local initiative “pro Fahrrad”.

What will be in there is still open, according to Holley, who is also a CSU local councillor.

According to reports, the concept mentioned should also include a map like the one that existed in 2007.

And point out opportunities for improvement.

Just one aspect: in the course of the completion of the new school, plans are being made to install a kind of bicycle zone near the school centre.

Holley believes the current situation on the marketplace has room for improvement.

According to his observations, there is currently nothing there that could motivate cyclists to cycle to the center of Swabia.

Proper bike racks would be an important step, says Holley on the EZ phone.

Stands on which you can safely lock the entire bike.

Some rather delicate metal constructions, as you have already seen here and there, have proven to be more of a "rim breaker".

The condition around the market place now discourages cyclists.

Wheel stands are often "rim breakers"

The cycling expert sees little room for maneuver on the sometimes busy main road.

They are really no fun for the cyclists.

Creating your own tracks here is ruled out due to the legal situation.

According to the assessment of the CSU mandate holder, Tempo 30 is also excluded from the road traffic regulations.

The fact that there is still a speed limit in the area of Herzog-Ludwig-Straße is rather the exception.

And have to do with the direct proximity to school and kindergarten.

What started as a test phase, restricting a section of the state road to 30 km/h, has now proven its worth, says Holley.

There are currently no plans to change anything.

Different in the burger field.

This spring, pictograms are to be applied to the road on the Burgerfeld street between Aldi and the customs inspection office.

They should signal to cyclists that they can also ride on the street here - but also, as is currently expressly required, on the sidewalk along the street.

According to the signs, cyclists are currently only being forced onto the pedestrian path.
