The Syrian Embassy in the Cuban capital, Havana, and the Cuban branch of the National Union of Syrian Students held a stand in solidarity with Syria due to the devastating earthquake that struck the country last Monday.

A large number of the Syrian community residing in Cuba participated in the solidarity stand, most of whom are Syrian students studying in Cuban universities, students from nationalities of friendly countries, representatives of Cuban institutions, youth, trade union and student organizations, representatives of Palestinian, Lebanese and Yemeni popular organizations, and a number of Latin personalities. The caller to break the siege imposed on Syria and to lift all illegal unilateral coercive measures against the Syrian people, especially in light of the ordeal and pain they are currently experiencing due to the devastating earthquake.

During the event, the participants raised slogans and chanted slogans calling for lifting the unjust Western blockade imposed on Syria, especially in light of its need for foodstuffs, medicine, and heavy engineering machinery to remove rubble and building debris to reduce the number of victims and save what can be saved.

 In his speech, the Syrian Ambassador, Dr. Ghassan Obaid, gave a detailed presentation on the efforts made by the government to confront what happened in the areas affected by the devastating earthquake.

 He praised the humanitarian initiatives sent by many friendly countries to Syria to help the Syrian people cope with the effects of the earthquake.

Dr. Obeid expressed Syria's great appreciation for the Cuban humanitarian initiative, which the President of the Republic, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, directed to send a Cuban medical team to Syria equipped and specialized in facing natural disasters and earthquakes, stressing that this initiative confirms the solidity and strength of the relations between the two countries, which have been established and strengthened over decades of joint struggle.

Ambassador Obeid also referred to the negative effects of the blockade and the unjust, illegal and inhumane unilateral measures imposed by the United States and European Union countries on the Syrian people, which impede relief operations, meet emergency needs, fulfill their hopes for the advancement of the country, continue the reconstruction process, and prevent the arrival of supplies. The basic needs of the country, especially food and medical supplies and the mechanisms needed to deal with the effects of the earthquake, as well as ambulances, firefighting vehicles, trucks to remove rubble and other necessary needs, especially in light of the difficult and complex conditions that the country is going through under the weight of the siege, sanctions and illegal coercive measures imposed on Syria and on third countries that want Extending a helping hand to Syria.

 Ambassador Obeid expressed his thanks and appreciation to the attendees and their participation in the solidarity stand with our people in Syria, and gratitude for the sincere feelings expressed by the participants in the stand.

In turn, Orwa Mahmoud, head of the Cuba branch of the National Union of Syrian Students, confirmed that the earthquake showed the falsity of Western claims that defend humanity and proved its dependence on the United States, pointing out that Syria is affected by an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, yet we find that Western regimes cannot separate between politics and the human dimension.

Mahmoud called for the immediate lifting of the siege imposed on Syria to ensure aid reaches it, stressing that the Syrian students at home and abroad will continue to defend their homeland and stand behind their army and leadership.

A number of participants in the solidarity stand delivered speeches expressing their solidarity and standing with Syria, the leadership and the people, and offered their condolences to the Syrian people for the victims who died as a result of the devastating earthquake, wishing a speedy recovery for the wounded and affected.

Participants in the solidarity stand affirmed that Syria is able, with the determination of its people and its rallying around its leadership, to overcome this difficult ordeal and advance Syria again, removing the rubble and rebuilding.

The participants expressed solidarity with Syria and its people in the face of this humanitarian catastrophe, and anger at the blockade, sanctions and illegal measures imposed by the United States and the European Union on it. and denying Syria access to it.
