Syria: Overwhelmed relatives take in earthquake orphans

A Syrian baby girl, whose mother gave birth to her while trapped under the rubble of her home during this week's devastating earthquake, now has a name: Aya, which means "sign from God" in Arabic.

Her parents and all her siblings have died, so her great-uncle will take her in.

Aya belongs to an untold number of orphans left behind by the 7.8-magnitude quake on Monday, which claimed more than 20,000 lives in northern Syria and southeastern Turkey.

The quake, which occurred before dawn, brought down thousands of apartment buildings with sleeping residents, killing many entire families.

In most cases, relatives take in orphaned children, say doctors and experts.

But those relatives who survived are also dealing with the damage to their own lives and families.

In the days of chaos after the quake, as bodies continue to be found and fewer and fewer survivors, doctors say it is impossible to say how many children lost their parents.
