The next United Nations conference on the oceans will be held in Nice in 2025, on the shores of the Mediterranean and facing the Baie des Anges, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, announced on Friday.
"An agreement to protect the ocean as a common good of humanity, that is our ambition
," he tweeted, announcing the choice of the host city after an interview with the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, at the Elysée.
This third conference, after those in New York in 2017 and Lisbon in 2022, is co-organized by France and Costa Rica.
France has a
"very strong ambition"
for this summit, comparable to that of the COP21 on the climate organized in Paris in 2015, assured the Elysée.
Emmanuel Macron hopes to bring together 100 to 150 heads of state and government, to which will be added some 20,000 delegates and many ministers, in June 2025, said the presidency.
France wants itself to be
