2023-02-10T23:15:12.670Z

The sound could be heard miles away. What did the local police report?

This Friday a 250-kilo, one-meter-long

World War II bomb exploded in England

that had been found on Tuesday near the mouth of a river.

No injuries were reported

.

The huge explosion could be heard from several kilometers away in the west of the country, the Norfolk Police reported.

"

It has not been a planned detonation

," said the security forces.

The police also reported that all members of the Army and emergency services that were in the area are "located."

The device, which had been found along the Yare River, "

exploded shortly after work began to dismantle it

," said Norfolk Assistant Police Chief

Nick Davison

.

The exact moment of the explosion can be seen on the official Norfolk Police Twitter account.

"Unexploded bomb in #GreatYarmouth detonated earlier during work to defuse it. Our drone captured the moment," they wrote.

"We can confirm that no one was injured. Public safety has been at the center of our decision-making throughout this operation, which we know has been a long one," the statement concluded.

The bomb was discovered by one of the workers who are building a bridge in that area.

Before the bomb squads began to manipulate the object, a protective wall with sand had been erected as a security measure.

"Our strategy was the safest option. However, there is always the risk of an inadvertent detonation," added the police command.

"Fortunately, all personnel are located and agencies are beginning to assess the damage to the river wall," Davison said.

a tragic end

In April of last year, another World War II bomb exploded, but that time the balance was tragic:

one person died as a result of the explosion

.

The bomb killed one man and injured another in Ostrava, in the eastern Czech Republic, when it exploded during excavations, police and media reported at the time.

"We can confirm that the explosion was caused by munitions from World War II," the police said at the time on Twitter.

According to local media, a 49-year-old man died while another suffered a minor head injury.

The police evacuated about 50 people who were in houses located within a radius of 300 meters.

World War II munitions are common in the northeast of the Czech Republic, an area that the Red Army passed through in 1945.

Prior to the fateful explosion, police twice evacuated more than 1,000 people in Ostrava after discovering unexploded ammunition.
