The deceased was a nurse at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Due to the epidemic, she moved to Mongkok to live alone to facilitate commuting to and from the hospital. The victim was killed by the fire and left behind a pair of young children.


The Hospital Authority confirmed that a nurse at Queen Elizabeth Hospital died in a fire in Mong Kok this morning.

Fan Hung-ling, chairman of the Hospital Authority, and Dr. Ko Bassing, the chief executive, expressed their deep sorrow for the incident and extended their deep condolences to the family of the deceased colleague.

The Kowloon Chinese Hospital Cluster is contacting the family members of the deceased colleagues to try their best to provide appropriate assistance to support the family through difficult times. The Kowloon Chinese Hospital Cluster Staff Emergency Psychological Service Center will also provide psychological support to colleagues in need.


The cause of the fire was suspected to be a short circuit in the "urine bag". Staff from the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department went to the scene to investigate.

The deceased, surnamed Liao, was 35 years old. After the fire alarm, her husband and uncle came to the scene one after another, weeping sadly.

It is said that Liao and her husband are both nurses, have a pair of children aged 5 and 3, and live in Tsuen Wan District.

She works at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and due to the epidemic, she moved out of her own residence in September last year to facilitate her return to work.

Some neighbors said that Ms. Liao's young daughter came to get together occasionally, but she heard Ms. Liao crying from time to time.

In the morning, the police and officers from the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department arrived at the scene to investigate, and later the police officers confiscated a glass wine bottle and a glass.

The scene was on the first floor of No. 925-927 Canton Road. At 2:55 am, a lot of smoke came out of the unit.

Firefighters arrived and used a hose and a team of smoke caps to fight the fire, and put it out at 3:50 a.m., during which time a female resident was rescued. She was in a coma after inhaling thick smoke. She was sent to Kwong Wah Hospital by ambulance for emergency treatment. Died at 4:25 am.

During the fire, 20 residents evacuated by themselves, including foreigners.
