Online dating scams continue. A 54-year-old woman was mistakenly involved in the scam and received more than 9 million yuan. The police arrested a man after investigation.
The police received a report from the female victim on February 6, saying that she met a man on the social platform Instagram earlier and developed an online couple relationship. The other party then lobbied the reporter to invest in virtual currency.
According to the instructions, the victim transferred a total of about 9.21 million yuan to 14 local bank accounts designated by the other party in 30 times between December 24 last year and January 31 this year.
However, the victim failed to get back the money and suspected of being cheated to report to the police.
After an in-depth investigation, members of the Second Team of the Eastern District Criminal Investigation Team arrested a 31-year-old local man surnamed Wei in Tsim Sha Tsui yesterday (9th) on suspicion of obtaining property by deception. He is currently being detained for investigation.
The police reiterated that anyone who commits the crime of "obtaining property by deception" under Section 12 of the Theft Ordinance, Chapter 210 of the Laws of Hong Kong, is liable to a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.
