San Albano
is one of the
most emblematic British clubs
in the South zone and
is turning 110:
the festivities start this Saturday with an official act that will be attended by authorities and members, while on March 4 the
traditional John Vibart Rugby Cup
, a small tournament that brings together invited teams from the Top 12 and the interior of the country.
San Albano was founded on February 10, 1923
by Reverend Henry Knight Clarke and was originally a cricket club called Old Philomathian Club;
then it was incorporating various disciplines such as
rugby, which was associated with the UAR in 1949
.
It competed under its original Greek name
- a quote from Socrates which means "If you appreciate learning, you will be very wise" -
until the 1970s,
when it was renamed
the Colegio San Albano Alumni Association
, due to administrative regulations governing at the time.
In popular jargon
he is currently known simply as Saint Alban
.
San Albano, in addition to being a club,
is also a renowned bilingual school
and is considered one of the best in the country.
The educational institution began to function in 1907 under the name "Quilmes Grammar School" and was characterized by having a
system of
Houses
or Houses, in which its students were divided in the best Harry Potter style to carry out sports and academic competitions
.
Logically these houses were not called Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Ravenclaw, Slytherin or Hufflepuff, but alluded to the three
main cities of Ancient Greece: Sparta, Athens and Corinth
.
Currently the club plays in Primera A, the second category of the URBA.
The school initially operated with a boarding school regime that was later discontinued and until 1974 only men could attend.
Many of the students later signed up to play rugby
(as is still the case today), which is one of the strongest disciplines that the institution has.
1981 was a year that marked a
turning point for the club, which moved to its current headquarters in Corimayo,
where for the first time it was able to have its own field for practicing sports that has 17 hectares.
Strong activities currently running at the club are
cricket
,
rugby union
,
hockey
and
tennis
.
Today San Albano has
1,800 members
"almost twice the number of 15 years ago," according to Clarín 's
president Fernando Roel
, and is seeking to add "many boys, girls, and families who share this proposal and want to enjoy our precious club", added the president.
The club was born in Quilmes and later moved to the Corimayo neighborhood of Burzaco.
As for the infrastructure, from the club they comment that during 2023
a hockey barbecue area and two paddle tennis courts
will be built, in addition to the five tennis courts that are currently in permanent use.
Lighting will also
be added to the attached rugby fields
and another key project is the opening of a second entrance to the institution in the context of the inauguration of the Universidad Almirante Brown station on the Roca line, scheduled for the end of this year.
"However,
we will continue to put the greatest efforts into the human and sporting development of our boys
, our sons and daughters," explains Fernando Roel.
And he adds to finish: "Being President of the Club is a source of pride and a great responsibility. But
the true secret of our growth and present is the volunteerism and commitment of many. Between the Board of Directors, Subcommittees, coaches, collaborators and managers, we are almost 200 people who work every day
, and for many years, to build what we consider our own House".
