How long can someone survive under the rubble?

There is no formula to define it, as it depends on several factors such as the age of the person, the access they have to food and water, the position in which they have been trapped and many more.

But there are cases that exceed probability and logic.

Like those of these six people, who defeated death after days and even weeks of remaining buried under the rubble.

  • Hope after tragedy: the emotional rescues of survivors after the earthquake in Turkey and Syria

Naqsha Bibi - Pakistan

This could be the person who has survived the longest trapped after an earthquake.

The 40-year-old woman was trapped in the kitchen of her home in Kashmir, Pakistan, when the 2005 earthquake rocked that country and Afghanistan on Oct. 8.

Bibi was rescued on December 13, two months after the earthquake that left more than 80,000 people dead and half a million families.

The woman survived by eating rotten food and water from her kitchen.

Evan Muncie - Haiti

In 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti, leaving death and devastation in its wake.

The death toll from the tragedy ranges from 220,000 to 316,000.

In the midst of the chaos, a miraculous rescue case caught the attention of the world, which was shocked by the tragedy in that country.

Evan Muncie, 28, was found by a debris removal team, as no one was looking for survivors anymore, four weeks after the quake.

Muncie was found in the remains of a market where rice came from.

He says that he was able to drink water from the dew and from the rain that seeped through the cracks.

He was severely dehydrated and starving, but he had no crush injuries, doctors said.

He had deep cuts on his feet, badly infected, but he managed to recover.

The Miracle Children - Mexico

The 1985 earthquake in Mexico City was the worst in its history, leaving more than 3,000 dead and causing devastation in the Mexican capital.

The emergency worsened as many hospitals were badly affected, making it difficult to care for the thousands of injured.

At Hospital Juárez, one of the most affected, rescuers found something that surprised even the most optimistic.

While removing rubble seven days after the quake, they heard a baby crying.

They worked for hours among the remains of what had been the maternity wing of the hospital and managed to rescue 14 babies, three of them newborns.

The babies had gone days without water, food, shelter or anyone to care for them, but they survived despite losing their mothers.

Some suffered minor injuries, and others have disabilities from the days they were buried.

Sonit Awal - Nepal

On April 25, 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Nepal left more than 8,000 dead.

A six-month-old boy became the symbol of hope in the midst of the tragedy as he was rescued unharmed after spending 22 hours buried in the remains of his collapsed house.

Sonit's father insisted that rescuers search for the baby as he said he knew he was alive.

The hood the boy had on protected his eyes and nose from dust, and a blanket he was wrapped in kept him warm at night.

A baby spent 65 hours under rubble

An incredible rescue happened in the midst of the 2023 Turkey earthquake tragedy: a baby was found alive 65 hours after the earthquake in the city of Hatay.

Once he was found, he was taken to the emergency room to give him immediate assistance.

Azra Karaduman - Turkey

This baby was 14 days old when on October 23, 2011, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck eastern Turkey.

Two days after the earthquake, they found her among the remains of an apartment building. She barely had on a T-shirt and had spent 48 hours away from her mother, who was screaming for help and was rescued after the brigade members freed the baby from she.

More than 600 people lost their lives in this earthquake.
