What is the future of synthetic diamonds?

2023-02-10T19:21:36.230Z

Five years after its controversial entry into the world of jewelry, the laboratory diamond has not caused the revolution announced by its followers, nor experienced the flop desired by its adversaries.

It was finally ready for couture week a fortnight ago, when the houses of Place Vendôme unveiled their high jewelry collections, but it was not without difficulty.

Presenting this necklace of great flexibility set with a central stone of more than 5 carats that grew in an American oven was symbolically important for Courbet, a specialist in laboratory diamonds.

Contrary to what one might think, the challenge was not to get your hands on a big pebble, but to convince a Parisian workshop to put synthetic stones on its workbench!

"We have had several refusals

," confirms Manuel Mallen, co-founder of Courbet.

The workshops receive pressure from the big jewelers, who dissuade them from working with laboratory diamonds, for fear that the batches of stones get mixed up on the workbenches.

This fear is unfounded since among all these professionals, the organization is such that the stones cannot be confused.
