A Latina mother who was driving to work dies in California in a dramatic accident with a Corvette that ran a red light

Kathy Chavez, 45, a mother of four, died at the scene after being struck by the luxury car traveling at about 100 mph on a Los Angeles highway. Her friends remember her as an entrepreneur who "worked overtime to support her children."


A Latina mother who was driving to work on a highway in Los Angeles (California) died after being struck by a luxury car that was traveling at almost 100 mph and ignored a red light, police said.

Kathy Chavez, 45, was heading to the Castaic post office, where she worked as a clerk, the NBC News Los Angeles affiliate reported, when her car was struck by a Chevrolet Corvette.

The woman died at the scene.

The accident occurred in the town of Lake Balboa around 3:46 a.m., at the intersection of Balboa and Victory boulevards, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Video from the scene shows the wreckage the crash caused in the 6400 block of N Balboa Boulevard.

Parts of the vehicles ended up at a nearby restaurant and

Kathy Chavez's Honda Accord ended up face up on the road after

being thrown into a large sign at the entrance of a shopping center.

Family and friends gathered at the crash site Wednesday night and posted photos of

Chavez

with his four children, ages 11 to 26, at the intersection light.

"This is devastating for us

," Oswaldo Chavez, who knew the victim, told the aforementioned outlet.

“Sometimes I would tell her, 'Kathy, go home,'” said Rozelio Erazo, a co-worker.

"She worked overtime to support her children."

Another attendee reported that the woman "had a heart of gold."

Chavez grew up in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Reseda after her family emigrated from Peru when she was little, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Michelle Matsuo, who met her at church, told the Times that Chavez was a joyful, enterprising single mother who worked tirelessly to raise her four children.

“She was a beautiful, caring and caring mother, friend and daughter,” Matsuo lamented.

The driver of the Corvette died at the hospital

and a passenger in that vehicle was hospitalized in critical condition.

Both were initially trapped in the car after the accident, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
