Did Ecuador punish the Lasso government in elections and referendum?

(CNN Spanish) --

Four days after the sectional elections and the constitutional referendum in Ecuador that represented a setback for the Government, President Guillermo Lasso accepted on Thursday the resignations of several of his officials and appointed others to replace them.

The movements come after citizens widely rejected the changes to the Constitution proposed by the government and after the Citizen Revolution, the movement led by former President Rafael Correa, obtained victory in several cities.

This Thursday afternoon at the Carondelet Palace, President Lasso signed the decrees for the appointment of officials and sworn in the new authorities.

Among the most neuralgic changes within his cabinet is that of the new Minister of Government, Henry Cucalón, who replaces Francisco Jiménez.

He also appointed Sebastián Corral as Secretary General of the Public Administration, replacing Iván Correa, and accepted the resignation of Aparicio Caicedo as presidential adviser.

“When the people speak, the duty of the rulers is to learn and listen, analyze, understand and above all act.

We cannot stop the march in our advance towards the Ecuador of well-being and prosperity that we all want.

Today the Government makes necessary changes not only to refresh lines but to ratify its commitment to the will of the people”, Lasso said.

The new Minister of Government, Henry Cucalón, said that this is an opportunity for the Government to reinvent itself and transform itself.

“We have listened to the message of the people that leads us to start a new stage, a strong turn, which is in the line of action and change, but never giving in to any destabilizing desire and worse than those who think that barbarism is a alternative (…) It is important to be clear that political instability is contrary to the progress of nations and that it leads to chaos and institutional degradation”, pointed out Minister Cucalón.
