Immediately afterwards, Antonio de la Torre and Clara Lago, the two presenters of the gala, entered the scene.

They said that the first thing would be the tribute to Carlos Saura, who died on Friday, the day before the Goya.

"His contribution to the cinema is of such magnitude that a thousand finery would be needed to honor his legacy," they said.

Tribute to Saura

The 2023 Goya Awards gala was tinged with mourning for the death of Spanish filmmaker

Carlos Saura

, who was going to receive the Goya de Honor in recognition of his extensive and active professional career.

The Academy awarded Carlos Saura the 2023 Goya de Honor a few days ago.

Saura was the director of award-winning films such as

¡Ay, Carmela!

or

Carmen

, and had just presented his documentary

Las paredes

habla at the 70th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

The delivery was made by Carmen Maura

, who worked with the filmmaker on the award-winning film

¡Ay, Carmela!

and on that occasion she won the Goya for best leading actress for her portrayal of Carmela.

"He was a wonderful, nice director, he made jokes with us. What makes me very sorry is that I didn't tell him all this," she said.

The honoree's wife, Eulalia Ramón, and her children Antonio and Anna Saura, went up on stage to collect the Honor Award.

There was

a standing ovation

, and Ana spoke: "Our father left yesterday, working until the last minute, teaching us that we must live passionately, that imagination has no limits, and above all that culture is the most important thing that we have, that we have to promote it. It does not understand ideologies or colors, it is our legacy, our future. It is an example of life for all of us, for all of us who dedicate ourselves to art".

His son Antonio remembered the four women in his father's life, with a special mention to Lali, his widow, and Eulalia thanked the health personnel who took care of him: "Public health deserves to be cared for just as its staff gave us take care of us."

Then

he read a note that Carlos Saura dictated to him before he died

, after knowing that he would receive this recognition:

"At my 91 years of age, I could not have greater satisfaction than receiving the Goya of honor. I have been very fortunate, shooting more than 50 films, I have had six sons, a daughter, a dozen grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, for all this I feel very lucky. I will be happy if the cinema I have made has added some inspiration to today's generation of directors. I always said that imagination is faster than the speed of light."
