The lecture, which was held by the Al-Quds Foundation for Culture and Heritage and delivered by Dr. Muhammad Al-Asiri, President of the Syrian Astronomical Society and Director of the Syrian Astronomical Observatory, included definitions of earthquakes, their causes and methods of prevention, based on physical and topographical sciences in the region and other regions of the world.
Dr. Al-Asiri pointed out the seriousness of what happened on the sixth of February, its physical and topographical causes, the difference of (tectonic) plates from one place to another and the occurrence of a collision between them, indicating that the aftershocks mitigated the seriousness of the situation, which will not be repeated at the present time and may not be repeated 250 years ago.
And Dr. Al-Assiri stated that what was reported on social media is not true with much of what it reported, as it is not possible to directly expect what has been said, nor to predict anything new, and that the light tremors that occur are an indication of the end of the situation that will not be repeated at the present time, pointing out that the occurrence of minor tremors in Iran and Oman And the Dead Sea is also reassured that nothing greater will happen.
Dr. Al-Asiri explained that there are serious cases caused by ignorance of how to deal with earthquakes, so it is not correct to open windows and approach them or go down directly from the upper floors, because the duration of the earthquake lasts a few seconds, so it is necessary to resort to a reinforced place in the house with a bridge above it or more durable than others.
In the lecture moderated by Muhammad Abu Jabara, Director of the Al-Quds Foundation, Al-Asiri emphasized the necessity of adhering to the Syrian building system (the Syrian Code), which requires the construction to be subject to earthquake engineering monitoring and approval, and this is what protects the building from exposure to collapse.
