The North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) is monitoring a high-altitude unidentified flying object hovering over northern Canada, Canadian media have reported.
Norad is a joint organization of Canada and the United States that provides defense and air control to all of North America.
The detection comes a day after the White House announced the downing of another high-flying object in Alaskan airspace and as recovery and analysis of debris from the Chinese balloon downed last week continues.
“Military aircraft are currently operating from Alaska and Canada in support of North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) activities.
Norad confirms that we have positively identified a high-altitude aerial object over northern Canada," the joint air command said in a statement sent to Canadian television CTV News.
“While we cannot discuss specific details related to these activities at this time, please note that Norad conducts sustained and dispersed operations in the defense of North America through one or all three of Norad's regions.
Norad is a binational organization of the United States and Canada in charge of aerospace alert, aerospace control, and maritime alert missions for North America," the statement added.
Canada has announced the closure of a part of the airspace in the presence of the object, of which no additional information has been provided.
The air forces of Canada and the United States have been mobilized in response to the presence of the object.
