Turkey twice refused to admit a rescue mission from Cyprus Israel today

2023-02-11T13:15:48.855Z

In Ankara they claimed that "they don't need additional rescue forces" • And what does it have to do with the whales that died on the shores of the island?

Turkey has twice refused to let in a rescue team from Cyprus, the island's media reports.

Cyprus prepared to send a rescue team this week, with rescuers, doctors and nurses to the earthquake area in Turkey.

Turkey "kindly rejected" the Cypriot initiative.

Yesterday (Friday) another attempt was made to offer help through the European Union, but once again Ankara informed the Union that it "does not need additional rescuers", this at a time when thousands of rescuers and medical personnel with tons of rescue equipment and medical equipment continue to flow into the country today - from all over the world.

The Cypriot delegation asked to go to the disaster area on a Romanian plane, but at the last minute the plane's crew was told that Ankara would not allow it to land in the country.

Turkey and Cyprus have a long-standing conflict after Turkey captured about half of the island in a war in 1975.

Despite repeated attempts by the US and Europe, the parties are unable to reach agreements on the future of the island, which would allow a meeting at the negotiating table.

Apart from Turkey of course, no country in the world - including Israel - recognizes the Turkish part of Cyprus.

It should be noted, however, that Turkey's bitter enemy, Greece, sent a large troop delegation to Turkey with several dozen personnel, and approximately 80 tons of medical equipment.

Dead whales on the coast of Cyprus

In the meantime, 10 whales of the type Zipheus hollow-nosed were washed up on the shores of northern Cyprus in the last few days, according to experts in marine biology - following the earthquake in Turkey.

The experts explained that seismic noises drastically affect the whales' ability to navigate, which is based on sound waves.

Six whales were already dead when rescuers reached them, and four were returned to the sea alive by volunteers.
