In video: Benjamin Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken (Walla system!)
US President Joe Biden told the New York Times tonight (Sunday) that the independence of the judicial system is an important element of democracy in Israel and the US and that any substantial change made should be based on broad consensus.
Why it's important:
This is the first time Biden directly refers to Netanyahu's plan to weaken the justice system.
So far, the references to the plan have been heard from US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and more junior officials in the US administration.
What they say:
"The genius of American and Israeli democracy is that they are built on strong institutions, checks and balances and an independent judicial system. Building broad consensus for fundamental changes is extremely important to make sure that people support them and that they remain sustainable," Biden said in a response that appeared in journalist Tom's column Friedman who was involved in a plan to weaken the legal system in Israel.
