The 60th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese University of Hong Kong this year, the school has launched nearly a hundred celebration activities. The theme is "Jiazi Lianxin, Responsibility and Aspiration". The launching ceremony was held today (12th) evening, and the celebration activities lasted for one and a half years.
CUHK President Duan Chongzhi mentioned at the launching ceremony that when CUHK was founded, it had already shouldered the ideal of becoming an international university by combining ancient and modern times, linking Chinese and Western cultures.
He also pointed out that 60 years old is a special age, which symbolizes a new beginning, and the country is stepping into modernization. CUHK will integrate into the overall situation of the country and make contributions to the country. The kick-off ceremony was held at Million Dollar Avenue. Before the officiating guests delivered their speeches, the master of ceremonies mentioned that CUHK has developed a whole person, and now it is more important to identify with the nation, and there is a link of playing and singing the national anthem.
In addition to the ceremony, there will be a high-tech display and a series of wonderful performances, including 200 drones and a light show.
Chief Secretary for Administration Chen Guoji, Secretary for Education Cai Ruolian, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong, former President of CUHK Jin Yaoji, and President of CUHK (Shenzhen) Xu Yangsheng all attended the ceremony.
Together with university trustees and executives, students, alumni, teaching staff, industry, Legislative Council members, etc., more than 1,000 people participated in the grand ceremony.

Different from the speeches of other guests, CUHK President Duan Chongzhi delivered speeches in Cantonese, English and Putonghua respectively.
He mentioned that the founders of the school 60 years ago established the school to promote Chinese culture, and quoted Li Zhuomin, the first president of the university, who said on November 7, 1963, that CUHK shouldered the mission of Chinese and Western cultures, and established that the university combines ancient and modern times and connects Chinese and Western cultures to become an international university. The ideal of the university, which he described as "far-sighted".
Duan Chongzhi also pointed out that the school celebration is an opportunity to look back at the past and look forward to the future.
He mentioned that the school motto of CUHK is derived from the saying "bowen yue etiquette", leading the school to provide quality education and train good citizens.
He pointed out that 60 years old is a very special age, which symbolizes a new beginning. The country is stepping into modern development. Zha Yichao, chairman of the CUHK Board of Trustees, mentioned in his speech that over the past 60 years, the educational model of CUHK has been unique. The collegiate system and formal education complement each other, and general education is also provided to achieve whole-person development.
He continued that the development of scientific research in Hong Kong will provide a lot of wisdom, and CUHK will ensure talent cultivation and scientific research, and strengthen relevant cooperation with China and foreign countries.
Chen Guoji: CUHK cultivates more talents to promote the development of scientific research

He pointed out that in terms of scientific research, the number of places in postgraduate courses funded by the UGC will increase to 7,200, and the admission capacity will also increase.
