(CNN Spanish) --

This is one of the questions that fans of the "Halftime Show" (or halftime show) and the Super Bowl ask themselves year after year: how much will the artists earn for their show?

The quick answer is: nothing, zero, not a dollar from the NFL.

Perhaps it may surprise many that singers do not receive immediate profits after their staging.

There are 13 minutes of high-level show in the most watched television event in the United States.

  • Rihanna will bring her Caribbean roots and 17-year career to the Super Bowl halftime show

The key here is: there are no immediate gains.

It is the artists' own followers who, through the consumption of their catalogue, "pay" – to put it in some way – for that almost quarter of an hour of show.

Of course, the NFL covers the production costs of the show as well as the cost of transferring the artist.

For context, the Super Bowl attracts an audience of over 100 million viewers.

This year the person in charge of taking the "Halftime Show" is the singer Rihanna.

It will be her return to the stage in more than six years.

The economic benefits of the "Halftime Show"

Show after show it has been proven that the revenue from this event comes at least the week after the presentation and it is due to the increase in consumption of the music of the specific artist.

A 2010 Nielsen Music article indicated that artists performing at the event see an average 555% increase in their music sales the week following the performance.

And that estimate holds up over the years.

For example, in 2019 the Maroon 5 group saw a 434% increase in the sale of their music after their halftime show, according to Billboard citing data from Nielsen Music.

In 2020, the spectacular performance of Shakira and Jennifer Lopez generated an increase of more than 800% in sales of their music catalogue.

As reported by Billboard, with data from Nielsen Music / MRC Data, Shakira registered an increase of 957% in sales while for JLo it was 800%.

CNN Business reported in 2018 that, for example, album sales, downloads and streaming

of

Madonna's music increased 591% after her performance at the 2012 Super Bowl, according to Nielsen Music figures.

Katy Perry and Bruno Mars also reported extraordinary gains.

So Rihanna can sing "B*** better have my money / pay me what you owe me" knowing that she will indeed get her money from the "Halftime Show" and that, if the trend continues, that income will be at big.
