More than 5,000 pregnant women have entered Argentina in recent months, most of them in the last weeks of their pregnancy, according to the national immigration agency: "The problem is that they arrive in Argentina, register the babies here and then leave. Our passports are considered safe around the world."

More than 5,000 pregnant women have entered Argentina in recent months, including 33 on one flight on Thursday.

All the women were in the final weeks of their pregnancies, according to the National Immigration Agency.

According to information, the women want to ensure that their babies are born in Argentina in order for them to receive Argentine citizenship.

According to CNN, the number of women entering Argentina has increased recently, apparently as a result of the war in Ukraine.

Of the 33 women who arrived in the Argentine capital on a flight on Thursday, three were detained due to "problematic documents".

Three other women were arrested the day before, head of the immigration agency Florencia Carinano told the newspaper "La Nacion".

According to her, the women initially claimed that they were coming to the country as tourists.

"In these cases, we recognized that they did not come here for tourism purposes. They admitted it themselves."

Carinano also said that the women wanted their children to have Argentine citizenship.

"The problem is that they come to Argentina, register the babies here and then leave. Our passports are considered safe around the world. An Argentine passport allows entry to 171 countries without a visa."

Citizenship for the child also speeds up the process for the parents to obtain citizenship.

With a Russian passport, you can currently enter 87 countries without a visa.

Christian Robier, the lawyer for the three women arrested Thursday, said that "these women did not commit a crime, did not violate immigration laws, and are being held illegally."

During the weekend, they were released.

"Birth tourism" of Russian citizens in Argentina is a profitable and established phenomenon.

A Russian site offers various packages for expectant mothers who want to give birth in the South American country.

The site offers services such as private birth plans, airport pick-up, Spanish lessons and discounts at the "capital's best" hospitals, according to the BBC.

Packages range in price from $5,000 to $15,000.
