At the cabinet meeting this morning, the cabinet ministers approved authorizing the political-security cabinet to approve the establishment of new settlements and to train illegal outposts.

The certification was made as part of a previous cabinet decision to expand the settlements in response to the attack in Neve Ya'akov.

Behind the Scenes

The Israeli sources said that in recent days there have been talks between Israel and the American government regarding the planned cabinet decision.

The one who managed the contacts from the Israeli side is the Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer in front of the senior officials of the White House.

Dermer informed the White House that the Cabinet intends to legalize some illegal outposts and approve the planning and construction of thousands of new housing units in the West Bank settlements.

The sources indicated that the American administration sent strong messages to Israel in response, clarifying that it strongly opposes the training of the outposts and the construction of them in the settlements.

The big picture

In the past year, the Supreme Planning Council of the Civil Administration, which approves construction plans in West Bank settlements and training of illegal outposts, did not meet at all.

Sources commenting on the issue stated that there are 9,000 housing units in the settlements in various stages of planning that are awaiting the approval of the Planning Council.

In the coalition agreements, it was determined that within 60 days a government decision would be passed on the training of dozens of illegal outposts in the West Bank.
