Do you like cosplay?

If you're up to date on the latest luxury fashion trends, the answer may be yes.

From Loewe's Spring-Summer 2023 Minnie Mouse stilettos (already getting a nod from Kylie Jenner) to Balenciaga's Hummer Derby clown loafers, quirky footwear seems to be on the rise.

This week, another pair of shoes entered the conversation: the big red boot.

Presented by the provocative New York arts collective MSCHF - the same people who created Lil Nas X's satanic sneakers and these exorbitantly priced "Birkinstocks" - the giant rubber boots are ridiculous, impossibly round and suspiciously similar to those worn by the character from Japanese manga Astro Boy.

"Cartoon boots for a cool 3D world," read the MSCHF press release.

"If you kick someone in these boots, they BOING."

The shoes, which go on sale February 16 for $350, have unsurprisingly drawn the attention of the internet.

On TikTok, a video showing off the boots has surpassed 3 million views and more than half a million likes in 24 hours.

Potential buyers get noticed on social media.

"How much I need them NOW!" exclaimed one Instagram follower in the original MSCHF post.

"Those big red boots will be mine," another tweeted.

"The caricature is an abstraction that frees us from the limitations of reality," says MSCHF.

After years of practical clothing in a pandemic, fashion seems to be entering an absurd era.

At the recent Grammys, Harry Styles wore a stunning "clowncore" jumpsuit from emerging brand EgonLab.

Ten days earlier, Doja Cat sat front row at Viktor and Rolf's couture show in Paris (in which the models wore ball gowns backwards and to the side) with a makeshift mustache made from eyelash extensions.

And during the menswear shows in Milan, British label JW Anderson collaborated with rain boot brand Wellipets to create these frog-faced sandals.

The MSCHF often defies convention by staging stunts or launching products that vehemently go against the grain.

But in this case, the collective's big red boots jump on the fashion bandwagon.
