The driver of a box truck was arrested Monday after striking at least eight pedestrians in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York.
The vehicle tried to evade officers, who told it to stop, and veered onto the sidewalk, colliding with the victims and colliding with a patrol car.
At least two of the victims are in critical condition.
Justin Brannan, the area's representative councilman, said the incident appeared to be random, but "obviously on purpose."
At the moment the identity of the driver, who was arrested after the incident, is unknown.
The authorities have not provided further details about the situation, although Fabien Levy, a spokesman for the New York mayor's office, announced on Twitter that there were no additional active threats at the moment.
